The search for people still missing after the Virgo Transport 8 sank in Indonesia’s Java Sea is entering a critical underwater phase, with rescuers continuing to enter the wreck as difficult conditions complicate efforts to locate more victims.

On Monday, September 21, Basarnas Special Group divers recovered two additional bodies from inside the sunken vessel during the ninth day of search-and-rescue operations. The latest recoveries bring the confirmed death toll to 12, while 108 people have been rescued and 123 remain missing.

The latest figures were confirmed by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) after the two victims were found during morning diving operations in the Masalembo waters of the Java Sea.

According to ANTARA’s latest report on the operation, the two male victims were located at approximately 9:04 a.m. and 9:13 a.m. local time. They were subsequently evacuated by helicopter for identification and further handling.

The development is significant because the search has increasingly shifted toward the vessel itself. Rather than relying only on surface searches, rescue teams are now attempting to access the overturned ferry and identify areas where missing passengers may still be located.

The figures are based on the latest information released by Basarnas on September 21. Because the operation remains active, the casualty figures may change as additional victims are recovered and identified.

Two More Victims Found Inside the Wreck

Basarnas Special Group divers located the two latest victims inside the Virgo Transport 8 on Monday morning.

The first victim was found at approximately 9:04 a.m. local time, followed by a second discovery at around 9:13 a.m., according to Basarnas information reported by ANTARA.

Both victims were male. After being brought out of the wreck, they were transported by helicopter to Syamsudin Noor Air Base in Banjarbaru for identification and further procedures.

The discoveries also changed the number of people still unaccounted for. With 243 people listed aboard the vessel, 108 survivors and 12 confirmed deaths leave 123 people still missing.

What Happened to the Virgo Transport 8?

The Virgo Transport 8 was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when it encountered severe weather in the Java Sea on September 13.

According to an early account from Basarnas reported by ANTARA, the vessel lost contact after encountering severe weather during the voyage. Authorities received the initial distress report at approximately 4:10 a.m. local time.

The ferry was carrying 243 people when the accident occurred. Basarnas subsequently coordinated a joint response involving maritime and emergency agencies as rescuers worked to locate the vessel and its passengers.

The initial rescue effort resulted in 108 people being brought to safety, while the search continued for those who remained missing.

The wreck was later located on the seabed in the Java Sea. Basarnas has reported that the vessel is lying at a depth of roughly 30 metres, although conditions around the wreck have continued to complicate underwater operations.

The Hardest Part of the Search Is Now Underwater

The continuing search is being complicated by conditions around the wreck.

Strong currents, waves, limited underwater visibility and the position of the overturned vessel have made it difficult for divers to safely enter and inspect every section of the ferry.

Reuters reported that divers have faced strong currents, poor visibility, high waves and the complex structure of the vessel as they attempt to reach its interior.

These conditions mean that the search cannot simply be conducted continuously. Divers have to work within periods when underwater conditions are considered sufficiently safe for specialist operations.

Technology Is Helping Rescuers Navigate the Wreck

Basarnas has also been using remotely operated technology to support the underwater search.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) can be controlled from the surface and used to inspect parts of the wreck that may be difficult or dangerous for divers to reach directly.

According to Basarnas information reported by ANTARA, the ROV has been used to examine corridors inside the sunken vessel, with the resulting images helping divers determine where to conduct their searches.

That combination of underwater technology and specialist divers has become increasingly important as the operation moves deeper into the wreck rather than relying primarily on searches of the surrounding sea.

The Search Operation Has Been Extended

Indonesian authorities have extended the search-and-rescue operation because of the large number of people still missing and the complexity of working around the sunken vessel.

Basarnas announced a seven-day extension of the search operation, allowing rescue teams additional time to continue underwater searches and victim recovery.

The extension also reflects the complexity of the wider recovery operation, including the technical work required around the capsized vessel.

The search-and-rescue operation should be distinguished from any subsequent salvage work. Rescuers are focused on locating and recovering victims, while the eventual handling or repositioning of the vessel involves additional technical procedures.

Indonesia Is Also Investigating What Caused the Disaster

The rescue operation is taking place alongside an investigation into the circumstances that caused the ferry to capsize.

Indonesian authorities have said the vessel encountered severe weather before the incident. Earlier reporting also documented strong winds and waves in the area at the time of the accident.

However, the available information does not establish that weather alone was responsible for the disaster.

The wider investigation will be needed to determine the full circumstances surrounding the vessel’s operation, condition, safety procedures and eventual capsizing.

What Happens Next?

For rescuers, the immediate priority remains finding the people who are still missing.

With 123 people still unaccounted for, teams are expected to continue underwater operations around and inside the wreck whenever conditions allow.

The recovery of two additional victims on Monday demonstrates that divers are gaining access to parts of the vessel, but it also highlights the scale of the remaining operation.

The use of specialist divers, remotely operated equipment and other search assets will remain central to the effort as Indonesian authorities continue working through the wreck.

For the families of those still missing, the search remains an anxious wait for answers. Each recovery can provide identification and information, while the continuing operation may also help investigators understand what happened inside the vessel as the disaster unfolded.

The Virgo Transport 8 disaster has therefore moved beyond the initial emergency response into a complex recovery and investigation phase. Nine days after the ferry sank, Indonesian rescuers are still working inside the Java Sea wreck in the hope of locating more of the 123 people who remain missing.
