A rare total solar eclipse swept across parts of Europe on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, briefly turning daylight into darkness and drawing millions of spectators to viewing locations across Spain, Iceland and other parts of the continent.

Daylight Briefly Turned Into Darkness

During totality, the Moon completely covered the Sun for observers positioned inside the narrow path of totality. The sudden disappearance of direct sunlight caused the sky to darken dramatically, creating a brief period resembling nighttime during the daytime.
The phenomenon was particularly striking in northern Spain, where spectators watched as daylight faded and the solar corona became visible around the dark silhouette of the Moon.
Reuters reported that observers in Spain witnessed totality lasting for nearly a minute at some locations, with crowds applauding and reacting emotionally as darkness descended over the landscape.
Spain Became a Major Centre of the Eclipse

Northern Spain provided some of the most prominent viewing locations on mainland Europe. The eclipse’s path crossed the country from the Atlantic coast towards the Mediterranean, allowing large numbers of people to experience totality.
Spanish authorities prepared extensively for the event because of the expected influx of visitors. Reuters reported that authorities deployed approximately 25,000 police officers and around 100 aircraft as part of security and emergency preparations.
The eclipse also brought significant attention to rural areas along the path of totality, with communities preparing special observation sites and welcoming visitors travelling specifically to experience the astronomical event.
Iceland Also Experienced Totality
Iceland was another major European destination inside the path of totality.
The country’s western areas experienced the Moon’s shadow as the eclipse moved across the North Atlantic. However, weather conditions meant that not every spectator received a clear view of the Sun during totality.
According to reports, tens of thousands of visitors travelled to Iceland for the event, with demand for eclipse-viewing equipment and accommodation increasing ahead of the spectacle.
Most of Europe Saw a Partial Eclipse
Although the total eclipse was visible only along a relatively narrow path, the eclipse itself was much more widely visible.
NASA confirmed that a partial solar eclipse could be observed across much of Europe, as well as parts of northern Africa and North America. In these areas, the Moon covered only part of the Sun rather than blocking it completely.
Images and videos from cities across Europe showed people gathering in parks, open spaces and other locations to watch the partial eclipse through appropriate solar viewing equipment.
A Rare European Astronomical Event
The August 12 eclipse was particularly significant because total solar eclipses are relatively rare at any single location. Reuters described it as Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
The last total solar eclipse visible from parts of continental Europe occurred in 2006, while the previous total eclipse to cross a much larger portion of mainland European territory occurred in 1999.
The European Space Agency also used the event as an opportunity for scientific observations of the Sun’s corona and other phenomena associated with totality.
