Musk’s Twitter Poll on the Suspended Accounts

Following the backlash, Musk launched a Twitter poll asking users when the suspended journalists should be allowed back onto the platform.

The poll offered users options concerning immediate reinstatement or waiting several days. Musk had previously used Twitter polls to make decisions about account suspensions and other platform-related issues.

The episode reinforced criticism that important policy decisions at Twitter were sometimes being handled through public polls rather than through clearly communicated and consistently applied internal procedures.

A Larger Conflict Between Twitter and the Media

The journalist suspensions deepened an already growing conflict between Musk’s Twitter and parts of the media industry.

Journalists had used Twitter for years as an important tool for reporting breaking news, communicating with sources, sharing stories and reaching audiences. Twitter’s sudden policy changes therefore had implications beyond individual accounts.

For news organisations, the platform was an important part of their digital distribution strategy. For journalists, it was also a place to communicate directly with readers and other reporters.

The suspensions raised questions about how dependent journalism should be on privately owned social media platforms and what protections, if any, journalists should have when using them.

What Happened to Twitter’s Location Policy?

The controversy was closely connected to Twitter’s decision to prohibit the sharing of real-time location information.

The policy was introduced after Musk said an incident involving an individual following a vehicle carrying his family had occurred in Los Angeles.

Musk argued that information allowing people to identify his real-time location created a serious safety risk. The subsequent suspension of @ElonJet and several journalists brought the issue into the centre of a larger debate about privacy, public information and online safety.

Why the Story Matters

The Twitter journalist suspensions became an important moment in the early months of Musk’s ownership of the company because they brought several major issues together: free speech, platform moderation, journalist safety, privacy, corporate governance and government regulation.

The incident also showed how quickly decisions made by a major social media company can attract international attention when they affect journalists and public access to information.

Final Thoughts

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter was followed by major changes to the platform’s policies and management. The December 2022 suspension of several journalists became one of the most controversial episodes of his early tenure.

Twitter said the issue was connected to its rules concerning location information, while Musk argued that protecting himself and his family from potential threats justified the restrictions. Critics, however, questioned the way the rules were applied to journalists and the lack of immediate explanations surrounding some of the suspensions.

The reaction from the European Union, the United Nations, media organisations and U.S. officials demonstrated the broader significance of the dispute. It was no longer simply a disagreement between Twitter and individual users; it had become part of a much larger debate about the responsibilities of social media platforms in the digital age.

What Do You Think?

Do you think Twitter was justified in suspending the journalists over its location-sharing rules, or should journalists have been allowed to continue reporting on the controversy?
