Heavyweight Champion Survives Accident That Claims Lives of Key Team Members
World heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has been left devastated after two of his closest friends and team members were confirmed dead following a tragic car accident in Nigeria. The crash, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, also left Joshua with minor injuries.
The former unified heavyweight champion was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident and was taken to hospital for medical checks.
Victims Identified as Joshua’s Trainer and Strength Coach

Later reports confirmed that the two fatalities were Latif “Latz” Ayodele, Joshua’s longtime personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
The heartbreaking news was officially confirmed by Matchroom Boxing and 258 MGT, Joshua’s management company.
“With profound sadness, it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away.
Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain under observation.”
The statement also extended condolences to all families affected and requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time.
What Caused the Crash?

According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV as part of a convoy when the vehicle collided with a truck parked along the expressway.
Initial reports suggested that speeding and an attempted overtake may have contributed to the accident. However, Ogun State’s Police Commissioner later told ESPN that a burst tyre caused the driver to lose control and crash into the stationary truck.
Joshua’s security team, which was traveling in a separate vehicle behind him, reportedly avoided the crash.
Disturbing Footage Emerges from the Scene

Videos circulating on social media showed Joshua sitting inside the heavily damaged vehicle, visibly shaken and in pain. Additional footage later showed him outside the car, still wincing as emergency responders attended to the scene.
Just hours before the accident, Joshua had posted an Instagram story showing him playing table tennis with Ayodele — a moment that has since taken on heartbreaking significance.
Joshua Was in Nigeria After Jake Paul Knockout Win

The British boxer, who proudly embraces his Nigerian heritage, was in the country following his recent victory over Jake Paul.
On December 19, Joshua knocked out the YouTuber-turned-boxer in the sixth round of their bout in Miami, reportedly breaking Paul’s jaw in two places. A full recap of the fight can be found on BBC Sport.
Boxing Plans Likely on Hold
Before the accident, Joshua had been linked with a potential 2026 mega-fight against Tyson Fury, while discussions were also ongoing for a possible February return to the ring.
However, in light of the tragic incident and the emotional toll of losing two key members of his inner circle, any immediate boxing plans are now expected to be delayed.
A Moment of Mourning for the Boxing World

The global boxing community has since flooded social media with messages of support for Joshua, while paying tribute to Ayodele and Ghami — both widely respected figures behind the scenes of Joshua’s success.
